Purim

We have a bunch of things going on for Purim:

1.  All-Kavana Party - Monday, March 9.  Everybody welcome!  Shake your noise maker!  Come in a costume (now matter how old you are ... seriously!)  Costume parade at 6:15, Megillah reading at 7:30 (in Hebrew, with English explanation).  Come eat hamentaschen and learn about Esther, Jewish gal-superhero.  Free.  At Kavana.  (Note: we are not serving dinner.)

2.  It's a Purim tradition to give gifts of food to friends on Purim, and we'd like to facilitate this tradition.  Join Kavana volunteers Suzi LeVine and Atar Baer on Sun. March 8, from 1:30-3:30pm, at a home in Queen Anne.  Bake hamentaschen (triangular cookies), decorate and assemble mishloach manot (gift boxes), and fill them with small treats for your pals.

We will provide the dough for baking the cookies, paper bags to stuff your treats into, and arts & crafts supplies.  We ask that you bring:

  • Dried fruits, nuts, or other goodies to put in your mishloach manot
  • Your favorite filling for the cookies (pie filling or a thick jam works well)
  • Optional - containers for your mishloach manot
  • Kids, please bring a parent

Please rsvp  for location.

3.  Can't bake your own hamentaschen but want to order some from a pro?  Order them from Phyllis Rosen.  (Phyllis will be catering the hamentaschen for our Purim party.  We'll put you in touch with her in case you'd like to buy a dozen or two for your family to eat at home.  Think of this as a business connection, not a Kavana event.)  Contact us and we'll put you in touch with her.

4.  Into social justice?  Want to volunteer?  Together with Jewish Family Service (JFS), Kavana is going to deliver food baskets to 8 families in the Ballard, Phinney, Greenwood, Fremont & Queen Anne areas.  These families are low income, seniors or disabled.  We'l do this 4 times/year, near major Jewish holidays, including Purim.

  • We need 1 person to pick up food baskets at JFS (Capitol Hill - Sun. Mar. 8, by 2pm)
  • We need 8 other volunteers to make deliveries (afternoon of Sun. Mar. 8)
  • We'd ike kids/families to make decorated cards for the baskets (nothing fancy - a hand-made picture by a kid would be great.)  To sign up, please contact us by Mon. Mar. 2, and we'll put you in touch with Elizabeth Ralston, Kavana Volunteer.

5.  Into social justice?  Want to help people who can not afford fresh fruits and vegetables?  It's a Purim tradition to give matanot le-evyonim (gifts to the poor).  So at our Purim party, we will collect money to buy extra CSA shares for low-income families.  For every $600 we raise, we'll be able to buy a food share for the whole growing season.
