Birkat HaChama (Blessing of the Sun)
Once every 28 years....
This mystical prayer service is done once every 28 years, to mark the completion of the sun's cycle through the cosmos. (Rabbi Rachel Nussbaum is not a hippy, but she might come close.)
Date: Wed. Apr. 8, 2009.
Time: 6am. (Yes, we know this is very early, but we'll watch the sun rise during the service, and all go out for coffee together after.)
Location: Madrona Park, by the beach. Click here for info. about Madrona Park (including bus/transit info.) Click here for map.
Click here for a very funny article from the NY Times, circa 1897, where a Rabbi was arrested for gathering Jews to perform this ceremony. "...The attempt of a foreign citizen to explain to an American Irishman an astronomical situation and a tradition of the Talmud was a dismal failure."
