Holiday Prep & Practice Series for Adults
Looking to bring more meaning to your holiday experiences?
Want to connect with other Jews through fun hands-on activities and discussions?
Us too!
Up next is Shavuot Prep: We're going to learn to make our own blintzes, while we explore the roots of dairy-eating on Shavuot. Rumor has it that Kavana partner Julie Katz has an out-of-this-world blintz recipe that she's willing to share with us -- thanks Julie!
- Date: Sunday, May 20th
- Time & Location: 1:30-3:30pm at a home on Queen Anne.
- Please RSVP if you plan on attending so we can send you more details.
Upcoming June Session:
Challah Prep - exact date TBD. Love the smell of freshly baked bread? Have you always wanted to learn how to make your own mouth-wateringly-delicious challah? Come learn the tricks of the trade from Kavana partner (and baker extraordinaire!) Deb Arnold on a Thursday evening, and take home dough so that you'll have your own loaf ready in time for Shabbat the next day. We'll even throw in a little learning about challah-baking traditions from across Jewish history.
Cost & Location Details for Kavana's Adult Prep & Practice program:
- Cost depends on the session, but shouldn't be more than $10 per adult
- Location will differ for each session depending on the activities
Past Sessions:
- Chanukah Prep: Learn to make (fair trade) Chanukah gelt, with a social justice component. (Our Social Justice Team has been working on raising awareness in the Jewish community about the slavery in the chocolate industry). Explore as a group the connection between Chanukah and freedom themes. For this chocolate-molding extravaganza, we'll be meeting in a commercial kitchen in Interbay (thanks so much, Catering by Phyllis, for donating the space!). In addition to enjoying each other's company and snacks during the course of the evening, our plan is to send all participants home with a small bag of hand-made chocolate gelt in time for Chanukah!
- Purim Prep: It turns out that our very own Roberta Klarreich has a double identity... by day she's a Kavana partner, and by night, she's an improv comedian! For our Purim Prep event, she's volunteered to get us all in the Purim spirit -- after all, it's a holiday where everything is upside down and topsy-turvy, and no one is exactly who they seem. Please come ready to shake things up a bit -- it'll be a really fun improv night, with games and exercises designed to get the creative juices flowing. We'll be interspersing the drama activities with some learning about the holiday and the story of Megillat Esther, and of course some snacks and drinks. No prior experience necessary (really, the goal isn't to be any good at it; it's just to have fun together!).
Shout-Outs:
- Funding for Kavana's Holiday Prep & Practices Series was made possible by a grant from the Special Initiatives Fund of the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle and by the BYFI Alumni Venture Fund.
- Thanks to our super volunteer, Roberta K. for making this series happen!
