Movie Nights

Join us to watch and discuss movies with Jewish themes.  This year's focus is documentaries that raise provocative cultural, political, social and religious questions.

The schedule for 2009/2010 is:

Thurs. Dec. 17, 2009 - Unsettled

During the Gaza withdrawal, three young Israelis will be forced from their homes, two soldiers will be sent to evict them, and one activist will try to help her country avoid a war.  "Unsettled" is the story of a generation on the front lines of a nation's battle against itself.  -- From film's web site

 Date TBD - Watermarks

Watermarks is the story of the champion women swimmers of the legendary Jewish sports club, Hakoah Vienna, which was founded in 1909 in response to a law which forbade Austrian sports clubs from accepting Jewish athletes. Hakoah rapidly grew into one of Europe's biggest athletic clubs, while achieving astonishing success in many diverse sports. In the 1930s Hakoah's best-known triumphs came from its women swimmers, who dominated national competitions in Austria. In 1938, the Nazis shut down the club. Sixty-five years later, this film meets the members of the women’s swim team in their homes around the world.  -- From film's web site

Thurs. May 13, 2010 - Blessed is the Match

The first documentary feature about Hannah Senesh, the World War II-era poet and diarist who became a paratrooper, resistance fighter and modern-day Joan of Arc. Safe in Palestine in 1944, Hannah joined a mission to rescue Jews in her native Hungary. Shockingly, it was the only military rescue mission for Jews during the Holocaust.  The film retraces the perilous mission of Hannah and 31 other Jewish-Palestinian parachutists. Finally, through Hannah's diary entries and poetry - and through her correspondence with her mother - Blessed Is the Match looks back on the life of a uniquely talented and complex girl who came of age in a world descending into madness.  (Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Seattle Jewish Film Festival in 2009.)  -- From film's web site.
