Vision and Mission Statement

Vision
Kavana’s family education programming engages children and parents in dialogue with Jewish tradition to help families forge identity and generate personally meaningful Jewish life.

Mission
Kavana’s family education program implements its vision in the following ways:

  • It addresses the whole family with programs designed for children and parents to learn both together and separately.
  • It creates desire to participate in Jewish life through experiential, hands-on, and inquiry-based learning.
  • It cultivates self-sufficiency by teaching the rituals and skills for lifelong, personally relevant Jewish living.
  • It provides an opportunity for families to explore Jewish values together.
  • It helps individuals see themselves as part of a larger community by linking learning to social action and the wonder of the natural world.

By pursuing these goals together we foster a close-knit community.

Program Structure

  • A la carte selection: We believe that, by providing these program series in an A la carte fashion, it'll meet the needs of people coming from a broad array of backgrounds and wanting different amounts of exposure to Jewish learning.

  • Cooperative job sharing: In the spirit of being a cooperative, participants within each series will participate within a rotation of jobs helping to make each of the programs tick (ie - bringing food, staffing a station, etc...).  The roles and dates will be assigned out and then parents can then trade dates/roles as needed.

  • High Quality at an Affordable Price: We have received a very generous grant from the Legacy Heritage Foundation to innovate and really educate without a box (nevermind being out of the box).  This allows us to offer very high quality and deeply thought out educational opportunities for a really reasonable price.   So - while our programs are down to earth and very accessible, they are very high quality in terms of the education and are very focused on the Vision and Mission stated above.

Kavana's Educators:
Our education program is staffed by creative and accomplished professionals, working closely with Kavana partners.  Kavana has hired three professional educators to help us bring our ideas to fruition.

Darci Lewis is advising us on our educational curriculum for the family Shabbat program. Darci is Assistant Director of a Jewish early childhood school where she supervises over sixty teachers and leads both an after-school arts enrichment program and a Jewish summer camp. What most attracted us to Darci, however, was both her enthusiasm for writing a new curriculum for us that reflected our philosophy and her incredible experience – gained already at a relatively youthful age – in Jewish education. Darci will supervise two talented children’s teachers, Shannon Cruzen and Sarah Adams, who will lead the kids’ Shabbat programs.

We also are fortunate to have hired Aviva Richman to design our after-school program. Aviva was one of the original teachers and developers of an award winning after-school program in Cambridge, Massachusetts, called Kesher (www.kesherweb.org), that we admire a great deal. Aviva brings a unique background in experiential Jewish education that we are excited to apply to Kavana.
We hope you will join us on what we believe will be a novel journey in Jewish family education!

Maxine Alloway will be leading the Prep and Practice program as well as the Havdalah Club and is spear-heading the coordination of Kavana’s overall family education programming in the coming year. She is a PhD candidate in Education at the University of Washington, with a focus on teacher learning. Prior to beginning graduate school, Maxine worked as an elementary teacher in several cities. In addition, Maxine has taught in a variety supplementary religious schools for close to fifteen years. She is honored to be working with this innovative community, as they build the foundation for providing a meaningful upbringing for many Jewish children.
