Prep and Practice

This program helps parents & kids prepare and practice for Jewish holidays through stories, cooking, building, and creative arts & crafts projects.

Our goal is to empower families to celebrate Jewish holidays in ways that are meaningful to them, with the community and in their own homes.

This program is for families - parents and kids all together.  It is appropriate for children in preschool and elementary school (younger and older siblings are also welcome, but the content will be targeted specifically for that age range).  Families will circulate through various activities in a "round robin" format, and we will cluster families into groups based on the ages of their children.

Prep & Practice is led by Maxine Alloway, a talented Jewish educator, with a gift for drama and storytelling.

Location: Due to high enrollment in the program this year, we've switched locations and will NOT be meeting at Kavana H.Q.  Please email us for location details.

Date & Time:  One Sunday a month, 10am - 12pm.  The dates for 2011 - 2012 are:

- Sept. 18: High Holidays
- Oct. 16: BONUS SESSION: Celebrate Sukkot (on the farm!) -- join Kavana's CSA group at Oxbow Farm to glean produce to donate to a local food bank.
- Nov. 13: Shabbat (new location!)
- Dec. 11: Chanukah
- Jan. 29: Tu B'Shevat
- Feb. 26: Purim
- Mar. 25: Pesach
- Apr. 22: Yom Ha Atzmaut
- May 20: Shavuot

Content: Each year we've chosen a different lens for learning about Jewish holidays.  This year, our theme will be Tikkun Olam -- how the celebration of Jewish holidays reminds us of the role we can play in making the world a better place.  (Past year's themes have included historical context, food, and personal meaning.)  Of course, we'll always cover the "basics" too of the core stories and skills associated with each holiday!

Register for the 8-program series: We strongly encourage you to sign up for the series - we're trying to build a sense of community here, and the more you come, the more you'll get out of it.  Click below on the orange button to register for the whole series.  The cost is $200/family for Kavana partners, and $300/family for non-partners.  (Yes, that's per household - aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents are welcome too!)

Register for single sessions: Click on the individual dates below to register for one session at a time. The cost is $35/family for Kavana partners, and $45/family for non-partners, for each session.

Volunteering:  As is often the case in our cooperative community, families will be asked to participate in various ways (such as bringing snack, greeting guests, cleaning up, etc.).

Thanks to Michael & Brian:  We'd like to give a "shout out" to Michael Taylor-Judd and Brian Judd, two volunteers who help run our Prep & Practice program.

Thanks guys!  We couldn't do it without you!
