"Kavana" is the Hebrew word for intention and speaks to our desire to empower individuals to create a meaningful, personal and fun Jewish experience for themselves and their families.  As a cooperative, we build an open and intimate Jewish community by drawing on the strengths and interests of each participant.

Featured programs:

 

Crochet a Kippah - Join Julie Katz on Capital Hill for two Sunday sessions Dec 7th & Dec 21st - 1:30pm

Kavana Film night - Thursday Dec 18th, come see Praying with Lior at 7:30pm

Kavana's Chanukah Party (the 1st night of Chanukah) will be on Sun. Dec. 21 at our new headquarters!

Erev Xmas - Wednesday, Dec 24 - Chinese Food, a Movie and 4th night candle lighting.  Kavana Men AND Women are being asked to cook (we need 6 volunteers) for this longstanding tradition.  Cooking from 2-6pm, dinner and films from 6pm.

 

For Parents, Families and Kids

Kavana is providing educational opportunities for more families and kids than ever before - in a totally a la carte manner.  Check out the Family Education Page for the Vision, Mission, At-A-Glance schedule, details and sign-up for the series of Kids/Family Programs.  For all but the afterschool and Hebrew Immersion program, families can choose individual programs, but we encourage the series.

Prep & Practice - Shabbat - helping families prepare to practice Jewish holidays together - Next one focuses on Chanukah - Sun., Dec. 14th 10a-12p (see more dates and details)

 

Hebrew Immersion Playgroup focuses on exposure to and acquisition of Hebrew language through games, songs and directed play. (for kids 0-3) every Fri through Dec. (started) Oct 17th 10-11a (see more dates and details - space very limited)

 

Kavana Moadon Yeladim (Kids Club)afterschool Education program - Provides children in grades K-5 with a deeper sense of Jewish community and identity.  This new and energetic program will include Hebrew language immersion and an arts-based Judaic curriculum. (see more dates and details) - Starts in November 1 or 2 days/week from 3:30-5:30pm

 

Kavana Family Shabbat - (for kids 0-11) - a morning of Shabbat songs, stories, prayers, and activities focused on Jewish values. Next one: Dec 13th 9:30a-12(see more dates and details)

 

Havdalah Club (for kids 8-11) In addition to eating dinner together and participating in a short Havdalah ceremony, children are challenged to engage in discussion and debate around philosophical Jewish questions through games and other fun activities. Next up - Dec 20th - after sunset, time will vary (see more dates and details)

 

As you are considering this a la carte menu of educational opportunities, feel free to email us to set up a discussion with one of the team members for the education team so that you can consult with them to determine which combination would work best for your family.

 

 

For Adults and All Ages

Kavana provides a wide array of entry points into Judaism. If there's something in which you're interested that you don't see here but want to help coordinate - let us know!

 

Shabbat Morning Minyan - Once a month we have a traditional Sat. morning service (including a Torah service).  Mostly Hebrew, it is a service with lots of singing and spirit. Kiddush lunch follows. Next one Dec 20th from 10-12:30

 

Coffee Shop Shabbat (or Kabbalat with a Double-Shot) - Intimate, warm and approachable Kabbalat Shabbat service with a potluck vegetarian dinner at a local coffee shop.

Jewish Identity: A Psychological Exploration- a safe and lively forum to discuss issues of Jewish identity amongst friends old and new - co-facilitated by Dr. Dan Rosen, psychologist & identify scholar and Dr. Noam Pianko, Jewish historian. 6 week series starts Sun. Oct 19th 7:30-9pm

 

Kavana Movie Night - In the off months between book club, we will be doing movie showings related to the season, current affairs or other interesting subjects.  Next up - Thurs, Dec 18th Praying for Lior from 7:30pm

 

Kavana Book Club - Every other month, join Jeremy Derfner and Hannah Pressman to discuss relevant and engaging books on Jewish subjects.  Next up Thurs eve Jan 15 from 7:30-9pm with The Man in the White Sharkskin Suit (get on the list so that you can get the heads up on the book and start reading)

 

Living Room Learning - Weekly study of the Parashat Hashavuah (portion of the week) with Rabbi Rachel Nussbaum in her living room. Resuming after the holidays.

 

Kavana Men Cook - on ice until mid-November - but essentially - a small group of men getting together to learn about and enjoy cooking techniques for traditional and non-traditional Jewish (and Kosher) food.  Starts in Jan. (date still TBD)

Carbon Salon!
