Family Promise - Help Host Families Who Really Need It
Four times a year, for a week at a time, Kavana helps a local church to shelter and feed homeless families. It's through a program called Family Promise.
Why, you might be wondering, is this important?
Well, times are tough, and some people in Seattle are really struggling. Sometimes they even lose their homes. Unfortunately, homeless shelters can't take families. When a family needs emergency shelter, men and women are separated from each other, and their kids are sent to emergency foster care. It's pretty inhumane. It stinks.
So, Family Promise organizes local religious institutions to host the families in church/synagogue basements, where they stay for a week at a time - and can stay together as a family. During the day, the families go to a "day center" where they get help with other things (like finding jobs, child care, showers and laundry, etc.) In the evenings, they come back to the church, have dinner together, and sleep on mattresses. In order to make this happen, we need your help.
We need volunteers to help (1) cook dinner for these folks, and/or (2) to sleep overnight in the church basement, just keeping an eye on things. (You'd sleep in a separate room.) If you can do just one dinner, or one overnight shift, it would mean a lot.
If you're willing to volunteer, please contact us! (Note that you can volunteer with a friend, on your own, or with your family. Your kids are more than welcome!)
The next volunteer orientation will take place on Wed., August 17th.
Note: Our church partners actually organize and take the lead on this. But we've been able to help out by providing lots of volunteers!!
