Eco Kosher Meat - Bulk Order
Note: We have already done one bulk purchase, and are not currently taking orders. But we're thinking about how to get eco-kosher meat on an ongoing basis. If this interests you, please contact us! This (below) is a letter from Kavana partner David Schor, who organized our first order. We ended up placing orders through both of the vendors listed below.
Dear Kavana-nik,
Got kosher, organic, sustainable roasted chickens and juicy steaks? Want some? The Kavana CSA team would like to know of your interest in cooking up a cooperative eco-kosher meat order and we want your participation.
Here's some information about each vendor:
Kol Foods: Kol Foods, based in Maryland, was started by Devora Kimmelman-Block, an active member of Hazon, the Jewish environmental food movement that spearheaded Jewish CSA programming in North America (Kavana's CSA is part of the Hazon program). Kol Foods works to provide organic and kosher meat from farms and slaughterhouses that treat livestock humanely and are fair to their employees. In addition to the kosher certification, Kol Foods practices very high eco-sustainable standards, all of which are reflected in their prices. See their web site.
NW Kosher: NW Kosher, as the name implies, is based in right here in the Northwest. Founder and food activist Lyle Stanley is based in Ridgefield, WA, outside Portland, OR. NW Kosher’s focus is to provide consumers kosher meats at wholesale prices by an established bulk order and monthly delivery service. Their line up includes poultry and beef from Wise Organic Pastures, a group of small farm families in Pennsylvania. See NW Kosher’s website or Wise Organic’s website.
After looking at the vendor websites you may have noticed that orders are by the case, and range from 10 lbs to 40 lbs. Through a cooperative bulk purchase individuals can split a case with others to lower their costs. Also, with a large enough order, we can lower the cost per per pound and save on shipping.
Please take a look at the vendor websites and decide if they meet your criteria for eco-kosher meat. The table below is provided to illustrate example prices.
Thank you,
David Schor
