Landscaping a Jewish Garden

Josh Ginzler and his family (Kavana partners!) have volunteered to host this event at their Wallingford home.  Please contact us for the address.

Date:  Sun. Apr. 25, 2010

Time:  Schmoozing at 2:30pm, gardening demo begins at 3pm sharp.

This is what Josh has to say about it:

"We often talk a lot of talk about the new food movement, and being better neighbors, and being healthier. But did you realize that we do this, in part, because it is in our roots as Jews? I mean, have you seen a Kibbutz? Well, lets talk about it all in a wonderful presentation to our community. If you have been aching to do all of those mitzvot listed above, as well as get out in your yard/garden more. Here is your chance."

"Scott MacGowan is the owner of Homegrown Organics, a devoted landscaping company with a vision to establish and maintain outdoor spaces resourcefully and creatively in Seattle. The goal is to create urban oases using recycled materials, native planting, permaculture techniques, and organic gardening methodology. In talking to Scott MacGowan, the two things that he will help us focus on is how to create a stronger permaculture and how to do so in sustainable & economic ways based on your particular site needs.
But we are going to take it one step further by bringing Jewish thought to bear on this matter. In fact, we will endeavor to show that all of the wise & sustainable methods have sources in the text of the Torah. "

"Heard about nonprofits gleaning home gardens for foodbanks? Well lets plant the corners of yard like the ancient mitzvah of saving the corners of our crops for the poor. Can't grow corn well in Seattle weather? Well, similar to the ancient biblical wisdoms, Scott explains combining crops beans &corn treats the soil for the corn & offers the beans a natural vining structure. After Scott explains the benefits of rotating crops...you guessed it, learn what the Tanakh has to say about it.
Of course, being Jews, the only thing we like more than growing food is eating it. So please bring a small plate of appetizers so that we can keep ourselves sated until we get home for dinner. We will supply drinks and utensils, plus a thing or two ourselves. Feel free to let us know what you plan to bring or just show up with it in hand. It will all be good, we are sure.
And don't forget to bring your gardening/landscaping questions. With Scott's help, we can discuss whatever you can think up!  (Dr
ip irrigation, fences, organic vegetable beds, blended edible/nonedible gardens, patios, plants, etc.)"
